When we think of June 1, we fondly think of warm days and cool nights, budding spring flowers, fresh cut grass but we should not forget that it also means the start of the Atlantic Hurricane season.
According to the National Hurricane Center, the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season was ranked as the third busiest with 21 named storms. The only two busier seasons were 2020 with 30 named storms and 2005 with 27 named storms. Meteorological forecasts for the 2022 Hurricane Season are once again predicting an above average season with between 14 and 21 named storms.
If you live or work someplace along the US Atlantic Coast, Gulf Coast or the Caribbean and you have not started preparing for hurricane season, time is quickly running out as the first named storm, Alex, ushered in the new season with an appearance in Florida earlier this month.
Whether for personal or business use, everyone should have a hurricane response plan developed and reviewed every year. What should your plan include? Some items to include in your plan are:

Emergency Supply Kit

Emergency Contact List for vendors, utilities, employees, etc.

Procedures for monitoring weather forecast and local evacuation orders

Procedures for inventorying possessions via photographs or video

Procedures for securing the building, equipment, furniture, boats/yachts

Routine maintenance of roof and storm drains

Flood prevention procedures and equipment, depending on your exposure

Procedures for safely shutting down equipment, fuel supplies, utilities

Insurance policy information and important claim contact information
